Afternoon Tea at the
Cliffs Pavilion
Enjoy a Summer Afternoon Tea with a great sea view!
The Cliffs Pavilion have just launched their Summer Afternoon Tea and Southend Theatre Scene were invited to come along to sample the scrumptious menu which is served in the sought after corner position of the Foyer Bar.  This area gives, possibly, the best views of Southend seafront and the best thing is, it doesn't even matter what the weather's like, there's always something going on outside of those huge windows with their expansive view of the Estuary, including Southend Pier, day-trippers, ships and boats sailing by and on a really clear day, Kent on the other side of the river.

I brought along my mum, Beryl, who is quite partial to a cake, and we were welcomed by our waitress, the delightful Hannah, who showed us to our table and instantly brought us a huge pot of tea to share.  For an upgrade you can opt to have your afternoon tea with Prosecco, Pimms or a choice of G&Ts but we decided to stick with the tea.  (Full menu choices below.)

I confess that I never really know in which order one should plough through a cream tea but we decided to begin with the salmon mousse open sandwich, which was absolutely delicious.  Making a joint decision to go from the bottom tier upwards, we started on the freshly made sandwiches followed by warm scones which went down a treat and all the while having our tea constantly refilled.

If I'm perfectly honest, it was a struggle for us both reaching the top tier but, seriously, how can you not find room for a salted caramel muffin and meringue eclair?  When something looks and tastes so good, it's really hard not to have a jolly good try, right?  Our only disappointment was to discover that the Eton Mess didn't have any meringue in it but, in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't really that big of a deal and like the foody athletes that we are and having been brought up not to waste anything, we polished off the top tier.

One of the best things about having afternoon tea at the Cliffs Pavilion is that you can follow it up with a lovely walk either along the seafront or through the cliff gardens which look beautiful at this time of year.  A perfect way to end the afternoon.
