“Sold” by John Godber sets out to entertain and educate. It conjures up dark subject matter relevant in today’s modern society here in the UK and across the globe. The main theme of the play concerns the sex trafficking trade - a form of modern-day slavery and investigates the relationship between a prostitute and an investigative journalist. How will their relationship develop and affect each of their lives?
Contrary to popular belief, prostitution is rife here in the UK with many women being trafficked across from poorer Eastern European countries such as Russia & Moldova, especially to coincide with key national events. This illegal trade enjoys an economic boost during these periods of national pride, which largely goes unnoticed by authorities.
These women are harvested from their families to provide sexual services for average British men, some at the tender age of twelve and unlawfully trafficked across to the UK.
The sex trade is the most ancient trade in the world, made illegal in many countries. Without proper licensing, many women are putting their sexual and mental health at risk, for the sake of supporting their families.
Southend Drama Society will be presenting “Sold” at the Dixon Studio, Palace Theatre, Westcliff on Sea from Wednesday 3rd May to Saturday 6th May at 7.30pm.
Ticket prices are £15.00 and £13.00 concession; available from the Box office, online at www.southendtheatres.org.uk or by telephoning 01702 351135.
