"A great day & night with no chance to nod off"
The 48-hour Improvathon is back and what an entertaining event it is. It is a show full of fun and laughter, is incredibly bonkers, and goes on all day and all night for two days. A strong team of local actors tackle any subject with hilarious results. The theme this year is ‘A World of Magic.’ They journey into the weird and wonderful area of witches, wizards, professors and magical beings of every description.
The sessions are split into approx. 2 hours each, all taking place in a very odd school which is a send up of Hogwarts.
Donning strange costumes and funny hats, the team of players improvise their magic. All the sessions take place in the school with Professor Mac Mac, Tarot Tiddlywinks, Dusty Tomes and others. There are spells, magic, romances, classes without lessons and, some very odd teachers giving some very strange ones. It is all great fun and the audience and the performers enjoy every minute of it.
The Improvathon is performed under the excellent direction of Ali James who keeps the participants under control. Everyone picks up the theme and runs with it.
Not only does the cast act out their roles, they improvise songs with solos and ensemble choruses, all helped along by an improvised musical accompaniment on the keyboards. Everyone joins in with the rousing improvised chorus adding their own bits. One song was in the style of the Blues Brothers and some others had cleverly overlaid lyrics and music.
There is murder and mayhem in a dark wood, with strange trees and spooky characters involving a montage of movement. Everything takes place with the minimum of props, which are used in very imaginative ways.
This Improvathon is raising money for Refuge UK, a charity that support for women and children experiencing domestic violence.
There is a 48-hour pass for those that can stay awake, although there is no chance of falling asleep with this high-powered, fast moving improvised comedy show.
There is something for everybody, with adult sessions and family sessions. You pay your money and you take your choice. You can attend ad hoc sessions or buy a pass for the full 48 hours or 24 hours. If you attend the night sessions there is not the slightest chance you can nod off, as the exuberant cast will keep you awake with great comedy and hilarity. The audience can boo and cheer , and have a great time.
The whole event has created an hilarious and unique experience, with a clever narrative running throughout. The unhinged story telling is presented with great attack. Some of the performers must have been there all night, so it is amazing that they can keep up the energy.
If you want to be part of an interesting and laughter driven experience buy your tickets now, or miss out. You will also be raising money for a good cause.
