"Imagine a real life museum where you can actually go back in time!"
If, like me, you didn’t pay attention at school during the history lesson about the Peasants’ Revolt and Wat Tyler, then this could be a theatrical visit you won’t want to miss with your little ones this summer holidays. The Museum of Living History is an immersive experience aimed at children but will be as equally entertaining for the adults. Inside the Heritage Barn at Wat Tyler Country Park, Pitsea from Tuesday 5th August until Thursday 14th August with show times 4 times a day, the Unpuzzled Theatre Company are welcoming everyone to come and join them to learn all about how Wat Tyler led the peasants to revolt against the King.
From the moment you enter the barn you are greeted by curators of The Museum of Living History, Artemus and Jonny Tyler, who you get to know pretty quickly, and will soon be on first name terms with. The fun pair, then take you on an unforgettable immersive journey through time with the aid of a bubble blaster Time Machine and heaps of energy, bringing history to life right in the place where it all happened.
Artemus and Jonny certainly make history fun and cool with their hilarious japes and it’s interesting to see just how engaged the children are as they watch this subliminal history lesson unfold. There are some wonderful puppets that the children get an opportunity to hold in the show, each one depicting a character from the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt. There’s also an chance to join in with a marching song which the children clearly wholeheartedly embraced, throwing themselves into doing all the actions.
The barn is surrounded by creative artwork that has been made by local children and groups, leading up to this performance, to create a museum type vibe and once the show has finished, the audience are invited to stay and have a look around and get a chance to join the company’s heritage arts workshop, where they can do some crafting themselves and be able to take home their own medieval keepsakes as a memory of their time-travelling adventure.
At roughly 40 minutes long, it’s just about the right length to keep the children entertained without having to worry about them getting bored, although trust me, this won’t happen, there’s just too much going on. It’s a wonderful theatre experience for kids who love their history but also for fidgety kids who don’t like to be sat down in a stuffy theatre environment and everyone gets a chance (if you want to) to join in. Even the adults. A perfect treat for the whole family this summer holiday whether you’re 3 or 103!
