The play adaption of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None is being performed by Nineteen 12 Productions at The Dixon Studio next week and despite the fact that the professional touring version was only on in the main house around the same time last year, have no fear, for director Daniel Steward assures me that their version will be quite different to anything previous audiences will have seen.
Having read Christie’s book a fair few times, Daniel felt that his direction should stay true to the way its author visioned one of, what would become, her most iconic of murder mystery novels. He tells me, “I want the cast to play it straight and I’ve worked hard with them to try and build up the tension of the piece.” The book, he also tells me, has influenced the way Nineteen 12 will end the play and, incredibly, there are only 4 members of the cast and crew who actually know how the play will end.
It was Daniel’s idea to put forward the play to direct although he confides, “I would really love to play the part of Lombard.” This will be Daniel’s second time at directing the group, having successfully directed The Ladykillers two years ago.
There are some familiar faces in the cast including Josh Picton playing General Mackenzie, who has won a coveted place at East 15 to study Drama this year. Sam Thomas playing Phillip Lombard is off to study Lighting Design at Royal Central School this autumn.
Alex Abineri is looking forward to appearing in the production as William Blore, fresh from directing Jonny Buxton's short film Le Chef which had its premier showing recently at Southend’s Film Festival at The Palace Hotel. If anyone missed it, Alex tells me that it will be showing at the Palace Theatre very soon.
As well as film-writing, Jonny Buxton, (Lawrence Wargrave) has always been a familiar face on the Southend theatre scene and he has also recently been involved with the Ploverleigh Players who won “Best Show” at the National Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Harrogate last month.
The play is selling extremely well with the Saturday evening performance already sold out, so don’t delay in grabbing a ticket and find out for yourself who the murderer is.
