Australian Pink Floyd return in November 2020 to Southend's Cliffs Pavilion
I have a small confession, I'm not a Pink Floyd fan. Now before you get all 'what the heck is she doing writing this' on me, that's not to say I don't enjoy their music; it's just that I was just a little too young to appreciate them in their hey day. That was up until the time a few pupils from my senior school were picked out from the local youth club to be in the Another Brick in The Wall music video. The lucky beggars! Oh, how truly envious the rest of us were having to sit in front of our televisions and watch them when it was first aired on Top of the Pops. How we longed to be part of that anarchic moment in pop history. Upon reaching my more mature years, I've re-discovered the Pink Floyd sound and I was fortunate enough to be able to catch Brit Floyd when they stopped off at Southend's Cliffs Pavilion a couple of years ago. I thought they were pretty darn good and so was really keen to find out how The Australian Pink Floyd Show compared.
Since their first ever concert in Adelaide, Australia in 1988 The Australian Pink Floyd Show have performed in over 35 countries worldwide; played at David Gilmour’s 50th birthday celebration and were even joined on stage by Rick Wright. TAPFS claims it is the leading and biggest show of its kind in the world.
Now for anyone who doesn't know Pink Floyd's music, let's just say it's progressive and psychedelic rock at pretty much its progressive and psychedelic mostest. As my friend commented during, I think it was Pigs, you do have to wonder just what they were taking when they wrote some of these songs. TAPFS are as near damn note perfect as the real deal and if you close your eyes, you could very well be in the company of original band themselves. They are possible the only (tribute) band who can say that they're going to play a few more songs before the interval and then carry on playing for another 30 minutes - make sure you go to the loo before is my only advice on that one. With the audience dynamic made up of mostly middle aged men, for once, the ladies toilet queue wasn't the longest.

Australian Pink Floyd's musicianship is beyond outstanding. Whether you're a fan of the band or not, the one thing you cannot fail to appreciate is that each and every one of the band is a master in their field of instrument. From Chris Barnes' wonderful vocals, Jason Sawford's keyboards, the outrageously talented David Domminney Fowler's guitar skills, Steve Mac and Ricky Howard's vocals, guitar and bass sounds accompanied by Paul Bonney's drumming talents, the whole band recreate the Pink Floyd sound, not least when Lorelei McBroom, Emily Lynn and Lara Smiles provide their distinctive backing vocals for The Great Gig in the Sky. Wow, those girls sure can holler!
All the Floyd favourite's are covered including Another Brick in the Wall, Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here, Money, Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Learning to Fly covering pretty much all of the classics from Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and many more for the die-hard fans out there not to be disappointed. Every song brings with it epic and often haunting sounds that literally surround the audience, accompanied by a stunning light and laser show, video animations on the state of the art high resolution LED screen and other special effects that are synonymous and almost expected as standard with any Pink Floyd performance. A massive amount of kudos must go to the tech team for this tour.

Jason Sawford was the only member of the band who spoke to the audience and even then only for a couple of times. Part of me didn't care, the intensity drove it forward and anyway, it niggles me a bit when bands feel the need to introduce every member and then take five minutes each to individually show off their playing skills. None of that needed here; it was obvious from the get go that these guys know their stuff and let's face it Floyd songs ain't exactly short at the best of times, let's just crack on and enjoy the music. That said, part of me was desperate to know why lead singer, Chris Barnes, was sitting in a wheelchair. He seemed quietly focused throughout the whole show and I've since discovered that he suffered with a prolapsed disc just before the Cardiff gig, so in fact it was no wonder. We wish him a quick recovery.
This really is one spectacular show that music lovers in general will love as well as the die-hard Pink Floyd fans. There's a reason that The Australian Pink Floyd Show is probably one of the most popular tribute bands in the world and the sell out audiences certainly go a long way to endorse that claim.
