There's a brand new theatre company opening its doors in January in Hockley and Hullbridge
Chameleon Productions is open to all ages, whether you are 3 years old or an adult. No previous theatrical experience is necessary and there are no entry auditions required.

Artistic Director, Steve Hulse, explains the reasoning behind the company’s name.  “It derives from the reptile that is able to change and adapt to its surroundings, just like a performer being able to play different roles and personas to suit the performance and situation they are faced with."

Steve hopes that the company will be able to make a difference to the local community.

“Chameleon Productions is designed to be all inclusive, catering for all abilities, ages and needs especially at a time when the arts in our secondary schools are being squeezed financially and in some cases being faded out of the curriculum.  Chameleon productions offers the perfect solution to allow youngsters to express themselves in a safe and controlled environment, learn new skills, meet and interact with new, like-minded people and have some down-time from the pressures of academic study.”
“Chameleon Productions believe that the arts are important in contributing to the development of the fully rounded individual, in addition to providing essential life skills. These values have become lost over the years due to the increase use of technology, with many young people losing themselves in virtual worlds as opposed to experiencing the real one.  We want to return to these traditional values and provide young people with the opportunity of experiencing live entertainment.”

Steve has 33 years’ experience in theatre undertaking roles such as actor, director, stage manager, lighting technician and sound technician.   He has also performed at many venues both nationally and internationally including the National Theatre, London, various Edinburgh Festivals, RSC, Stratford-upon-Avon and Santa Monica, USA.
Steve also has 20 years of secondary school drama teaching experience with his pupils putting on such shows as We Will Rock You, Little Shop of Horrors, Oliver! Beauty and the Beast and Disco Inferno which were likened to west end quality performances.

Steve adds, “Chameleon Productions also offers Educational Support for GCSE Drama Students and for auditions in addition to offering an actor show-reel service for both established and aspiring actors.”

Chameleon Productions has also secured a company patron, local professional actor, David Streames. David has worked extensively in television, film and theatre, performing in such productions as Les Misérables (Thenardier), Me and My Girl (Bill Snibson) and Annie (Daddy Warbucks).

I ask Steve what makes Chameleon Productions stand out from any other theatre groups around at the moment and he responds, “Chameleon covers a vast age range and, whereas a lot of other companies include all three disciplines, this is very much an acting based company.  I hope this will appeal to members who do not wish to sing and dance, particularly males. The focus will be on drama and drama productions, covering an array of genres that fall into this category.”

In the future Chameleon Productions plan to expand its staff base and offer its students the option to be involved in either drama, dance, singing, circus skills, film and tv workshops.   This will very much be an individual preference, rather than a ‘must’, allowing all members to choose their own package and feel comfortable within the workshops they have opted for.

Further ambitions for the company Steve informs me is to develop a set-hire business in which sets built for shows will be available for other theatre companies to hire. There may also be the possibility of set-hire to order. The final strand to the company’s expansion is to create an actor’s agency. Members will be able to join this agency and the Chameleon Productions staff will seek to find professional work within the industry for agency members.

Although Chameleon Productions is local at the moment, in the long term the idea is to establish the companies name both nationally and internationally by developing links with already established groups. This will also give Chameleon Productions the opportunity to tour their productions.

“Chameleon Productions is more than just a company it’s a ‘family’ in which all members, no matter what session they attend, can feel safe and comfortable in a warm, friendly environment.” Steve tells me.

“New friends can be made, social activities can be attended, and new skills can be learnt.”
