Chicago The Musical
MONDAY 21 FEBRUARY – SATURDAY 26 FEBRUARY 2022

This week, Sing Sing comes to Southend in a seductive production of Chicago The Musical. Have the bartender fix you a drink and enjoy a descent into a criminal underworld full of murder, mayhem and, of course, music.
Set against the backdrop of the roaring 1920s, Chicago tells the tale of two ‘scintillating sinners.’ Determined diva, Roxie Hart, dreams of becoming a star, whilst the voluptuous Velma Kelly is already a Queen of the Jazz age. These femme fatales will stop at nothing to achieve notoriety and find themselves at the centre of outrageous scandal. Their only hope of escaping the gallows is to hire hotshot lawyer Billy Flynn to defend them at a greatly publicised trial. With music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, plus original choreography by the incomparable Bob Fosse, this sizzling show was a broadway smash when it premiered in 1975.
The heroines of the show, Roxie and Velma, are played by Faye Brookes and Djalenga Scott respectively. Both performers command the stage well, with Brookes bringing plenty of moxie to Roxie. The energy and charisma she provides to the role makes her journey through the American judicial system a fun one to follow. Similarly, Scott truly embraces her character, creating a devilishly desirable Velma with a smokey, sensual voice. The leading ladies have tremendous chemistry, with voices that compliment each other to deliver beautiful harmonies, particularly in numbers such as ‘My Own Best Friend’ and ‘Hot Honey Rag.’
Liam Marcellino played the part of Billy Flynn on this particular performance, with enough charm to be crowned ‘the silver tongued prince of the courtroom’ any night of the week. The part of Amos, Roxie’s deluded, yet devoted, husband was portrayed by Jamie Baughan, who allowed the character to be delightfully pathetic and ever so endearing. His performance of ‘Mister Cellophane’ was, for me, a true highlight of Act Two. Showbiz legend Sheila Fergurson excels as the corrupt Matron ‘Mama’ Morton and the hugely talented B E Wong makes a marvellous Mary Sunshine. The ensemble is made up of a troupe of triple threats who enjoy much multi rolling. The company numbers, particularly ‘We Both Reached For The Gun’ and ‘Cell Block Tango’ were well executed and compelling. I noted one or two dialogue mishaps, but the cast were quick to keep the narrative moving in true professional fashion.
The direction was, overall, effective, with scene changes as smooth and slick as Billy Flynn himself. The orchestra, led by Maestro Andrew Hilton, made a great sound and captured every mood perfectly, from the delightful to the dangerous. It would have been helpful for certain characters to wear more detailed pieces of costume to assist the storytelling, however one could argue that goes against the minimalistic nature of the musical.
As I witnessed the trials and tribulations of Roxie Hart, I couldn't help but think how lucky we Southenders are. Our own demi-paradise is blessed with not one, but two tremendous theatres. Touring productions such as Chicago The Musical bring all the glitz and glamour of the West End right to our doorstep. Make the most of it whilst making magical memories.
Chicago The Musical is playing at The Cliffs Pavilion until Saturday 26th February. It would be a crime to miss it!

Sheila Ferguson is best known as the lead singer of chart-topping group The Three Degrees, whose hits include ‘When Will I See You Again?’, ‘Take Good Care of Yourself’ and ‘A Woman In Love’. Her many theatre credits include the musicals Thoroughly Modern Millie, Soul Train, Oh! What A Night and Respect La Diva and many pantomime seasons throughout the UK. She has also appeared on television as a contestant on I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, and as a panelist on ITV’s Loose Women.
Russell Watson is regarded as one of the world’s greatest classical singers, having released ten critically acclaimed studio albums. His debut album, ‘The Voice’ held the number one chart position in the UK for a record-breaking 52 weeks. Throughout his extensive career Watson has collaborated with Meatloaf, Lionel Richie, Paul McCartney, Alexandra Burke, and Luciano Pavarotti. He recently appeared as a contestant on the twentieth series, and castle edition, of ITV’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! His stage credits include Parson Nathaniel in Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds on tour and Karl Oscar in the English world premiere of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ Kristina at Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.

Faye’s other TV credits include Agnes Franklin in Our Girl and Helena in Atlantis, both for the BBC.
Djalenga Scott’s (Velma Kelly) West End credits include Lily St Regis in Annie at the Piccadilly Theatre, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the New London and Chicago at the Adelphi, Cambridge and Garrick Theatres. Her other credits include Anita in the national tour of West Side Story, Rizzo in Grease at Curve Leicester, Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show and Carmen in Fame, both on European tours, the US tour of Batman Live and Bombalurina in Cats at Kilworth House. Djalenga’s screen credits include Scarlett/Esme in Trapped for the BBC and Alexandra in the film I Give It A Year.
Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids.
Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, CHICAGO’s sexy, sassy score includes the show-stopping songs “Razzle Dazzle”, “Cell Block Tango”, and “All That Jazz”. Winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy, CHICAGO is the longest running American musical in Broadway and West End history.
Since it opened in New York in 1996, CHICAGO has played in 36 countries worldwide and has been performed in English, Dutch, German, Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, French, Danish, Japanese and Korean. Worldwide it has been seen by an estimated 33 million people, grossed over $1.7 billion and played over 32,500 performances.
CHICAGO, which is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, has a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The 1996 Broadway revival of CHICAGO was choreographed by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse, directed by Walter Bobbie, and produced by Barry and Fran Weissler.
