WELCOME TO A MYSTICAL WORLD OF FROZEN BEAUTY AND MAGICAL ADVENTURE!
Winter magic and Enchantment is heading to
the Cliffs Pavilion, Southend-0n-Sea
Saturday 25th March 2017

Thanks to Umbrella Productions' new show

CIRQUE ENCHANTMENT!
A magical and enchanting fantasy comes to the Cliffs Pavilion
Jacquee Storozynski-Toll chats to director, Stuart Glover
The circus is coming to town, but it isn’t like anything you have seen before.  This one is completely different as it is a magical, spectacular fantasy. It has been described as an ‘hypnotic mesmerising escape from reality.’   Cirque Enchantment has performers, dancers and breath-taking vocalists. There are acrobats, and stunning choreography together with an interesting and varied musical soundtrack.  They use current hits from One Direction, Sia, Paloma Faith, Rihanna and Beyoncé in addition to a mix of classical, classic rock, and dance favourites. The artistic and creative director, Stuart Glover’s concepts, designs, ideas and shows, have won commercial success all over the world. I chatted to Stuart, who is the driving force behind this wonderful show and asked him to give me some background to his production.

SG: Cirque Enchantment has been successfully touring for several months. It is a magical show with an eclectic mix of pop and film music. There are great vocalists, dancers, and skilled performers. It has a modern contemporary feel.  There is something fresh and different, and people who like commercial shows such as X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent will love this production. In fact, in the past, some of the artistes have appeared on those shows and we have in the current show, acrobat Orissa Kelly who’s been on BGT.
Cirque Enchantment is for everyone, children and adults who enjoy music, dance and the skills of the circus.

Why have you decided to complete the tour at the Cliffs Pavilion?
We see this show as having a winter feel.  It has a post-Christmas feel good factor.  It is not really a summer show. Although this tour is ending, we will return.  We have had good audience feedback and it has all been a positive experience.

How do you manage to pull such a complicated extravaganza together?
I have worked in the entertainment industry virtually all my life. I have been all over Europe and the USA. I used my experience and built it from there.  We started with the music and then as the style evolved, we finally matched it all together.  We decided who suits the vocals etc. To see how it all works together, you would really have to see it, as all the cirque acts and the singing and dancing overlap.  Usually, when you see a cirque it is just one act after another, this show isn’t like that, it is all interspersed and moulds together and a narrative comes through. It works on two levels, the audience follow a light story and then they sit back and enjoy the spectacle.

What is the narrative of the show?
A young girl, Scarlett, enters a cirque wonderland from a magical book.  On the way, she meets lots of curious characters. A character called Miss Enchantress (Paige Brooklyn Cook) an up and coming pop vocalist, acts as a ringmaster who has different sides to her.  She is a magical enchantress; she is quirky and fun like a Bette Midler type.  Then she changes and shows a different side and becomes controlling and evil, that is the vibe.  It is not a play or a musical but something much more.

What decided you to produce this show?
I wanted to work on a new style of entertainment.  I have worked on cruise shows and reviews, but this is completely different.  I like the challenge of bringing this kind of show to UK theatres.

As the show is such an extravaganza, what is the process involved in finding artistes?
We advertise open auditions for the dancers and singers, in the usual way.  However, as the other artistes are circque specific we approach people, look at videos and see what kinds of other skills people have.  There are no stars; everyone works together as an ensemble.

You are a writer and choreographer – did you choreograph all the routines for this show?
As artistic director, I oversee it all.  However, we have worked with several different choreographers and various vocal coaches.

As the show is so spectacular, there must be problems when touring as each venue is different.
All theatres have different technical problems.  However, as the show is fully rehearsed, we just need to adapt it at each venue.  Often modifications are  required, but we are used to it.

The parent company of the show is Umbrella Productions who are involved in many entertainment projects.  What else are they working on at this time?
Umbrella is just concentrating on Cirque Enchantment now.  We wanted it to be a theatre tour and not just a concert.  However, in the future they have a cinema show in the pipeline.  They also do a lot of corporate entertaining as well.

Didn’t you take part in the closing ceremony of the Olympics in 2012?
Gosh!  You have done your research.  That wasn’t with Cirque Enchantment that was something that I was involved with personally and was a great experience.

As the Cliffs venue is the last one of this tour, what are the plans for this show in the future?
We will be going on tour again in the autumn.    In the main, we will bring back the same production.  However, there might be some recasting due to non-availability of cast members.  Also, as things evolve there might be some reinvention.  Everyone will be working on other projects during the summer and then the 2017/2018 tour will start coming together at the beginning of September. We hope to return to the Cliffs Pavilion so watch this space and our social media for news on tour dates and special events!
