The Cliffs Pavilion had the seats removed for this one. Electronicore (thanks Wikipedia) St. Albaners Enter Shikari took the venue by storm on Saturday night, attracting the youngest audience that I have ever seen in there. The band were supports by 'Palaye Royale' who did a great job of warming up the crowd with an energetic performance.
Singer Rou Reynolds greeted the crowd with "Hello Carbon based life forms" a humorous sci-fi reference which seemed to suit their brand of electronic dance metal, which I have to admit, I was previously unfamiliar with. I can safely say that Enter Shikari are the most eclectic band that I have ever seen live or on screen. Their music is literally a tour of numerous genres which they have combined to make their own irrepressible sound. I was reminded of more and more bands of yesteryear as the evening progressed: Madness, Duran Duran, The Prodigy, Linkin Park and Korn to name but a few. The last two, more than the others, as Enter Shikari were formed in 1999, at the high point of nu-metal.
Since then they have evolved into something else, a nu nu metal if you like. The crowd was moshing one minute, and dancing the next, it really was quite a performance, helped by an excellent light show. Twenty seven songs meant value for money for the twenty something crowd who were clearly enraptured. Songs such as 'Arguing with Thermometers' and 'Take My Country Back' deal with topics such as climate change and Brexit, and make Enter Shikari seem like an important band. I can think of no British rock bands who are tackling issues such as this in their lyrics. This is a band who have been around in one form or another for twenty years, based on last nigh't performance they will be around for twenty more - if global warming doesn't destroy the planet first!
