Stephen Triffitt does it ‘his way’ and brings back some sixties nostalgia to Southend audiences in his Frankly Sinatra show
Stephen Triffitt is billed as the world’s No 1 Sinatra tribute. To celebrate the golden anniversary of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ most famous recording – Sinatra Live at the Sands, regarded as the definitive Sinatra live performance, Triffitt returned to the Cliffs Pavilion last night to wow Southend audiences with his velvety vocals.
Triffitt makes no bones about the fact that he is clearly British and in-between songs casually chats to the audience, filling us in with random Sinatra trivia during the evening; facts that your bog standard fan might not know, like what his favourite colour was and how many showers he used to take in a day. Triffitt has an easy way about him and even a few rather over-excited rowdy members of the audience pose no problems for this cool cat as he reminds them, with a wink and a smile, “Hey, I’m the one with the microphone,” much to the delight of the rest of the audience.

Regardless of the fact that Triffitt is a Brit, he nevertheless takes on the full persona of Sinatra when he is belting out one of the many fabulous songs of the great man. Triffitt actually really looks like Sinatra, it’s quite uncanny; complete with the sculpted hair, suit, shiny shoes and a glass of bourbon on the rocks, if you closed your eyes you could almost imagine being in Las Vegas and sitting in The Sands Lounge sipping cocktails such are Triffitt’s vocals so close to the real deal. Triffitt adopts all of Sinatra’s mannerisms whilst in song and you can really understand why he was so popular during his time at the Copa Room at The Sands Hotel portraying Frank. He tells us that during his time there, even the Americans didn't even realise he was English and were surprised to hear his accent at the end of performances.
Backed by a small but impressive 12 piece orchestra providing the big band swing sound, we are treated to such favourites as Come Fly With Me, Tender Trap, Lady is a Tramp, Witchcraft, Strangers in the Night, Fly Me to the Moon and of course New York, New York and finishing with My Way. Incidentally, Triffitt tells us, My Way, wasn’t one of Sinatra’s favourites. However, it proved to be the perfect song to end the evening and was in no doubt, a huge favourite with the audience who were all on their feet to give Triffitt the standing ovation that he absolutely deserved.
