Johnny Cash Roadshow
Palace Theatre, Westcliff on Sea
16th June 2017
Clive John and his Johnny Cash Roadshow rode into town on Friday and provided a thoroughly enjoyable evening for all those in attendance.
With music ranging from the 1950's up to the early noughties, the evening was broken up into two sections. However, the song selection was not chronological, so we didn't know what was coming next, or from what era.
John does an excellent impression of the man in black, both in appearance and in his vocal range. In between songs he spoke of how his love for his music came about; his Irish mother was a huge fan, constantly playing his records and he grew up listening to Cash. This, however, was far from a one man show. This was a production that included Cash's talented backing band: The Tennessee Three, as well as The Carter Sisters, led by Amanda Stone who took on the persona of June to great effect and the two had a good chemistry together on stage.
Fans of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack would particularly enjoy the bands rendition of The Statler Brother's 'Flowers on the Wall'. This group toured extensively with Cash during his career.
A favourite moment was '25 Minutes to Go', which was accompanied by an amusing animated short, displayed on a big screen behind the band. Perhaps some more of these would enhance the visual aspect of the show. It was also slightly disappointing not to hear more from Cash's acclaimed American Recordings.
Overall though, Cash fans couldn't really have any real gripes with the set list as all the classics were there, 'Ghost Riders in the Sky', 'Folsom Prison Blues', 'A Thing Called Love', and 'Jackson' as well as a rollicking version of 'Ring of Fire' which really brought the house down at the end of an truly excellent performance with everyone on their feet.

CLIVE JOHN IS AN ACCOMPLISHED SINGER, SONGWRITER BASED IN MALVERN, WORCESTERSHIRE. HOWEVER, CLIVE IS BETTER KNOWN TO THOUSANDS ACROSS EUROPE AS THE VOICE OF JOHNNY CASH AS HE PLAYS THE LEAD ROLE IN THE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED THEATRE PRODUCTION – ‘THE JOHNNY CASH ROADSHOW.’ THIS IS THE ONLY SHOW TO BE ENDORSED BY THE CASH FAMILY.
Both Rosanne Cash (the eldest daughter of Johnny Cash and his first wife, Vivian Liberto Cash Distin) and her daughter Caitlin have both seen the show. |
The spirit of the Man in Black is alive and ‘kicking like a mule’ with an outstanding celebration of the iconic legend by the Carter/Cash endorsed Johnny Cash Roadshow.
This is gold standard, fire-cracking entertainment from the first note, delivering an inspired set of cherished numbers with impeccable rhythmic pace. A dynamic performance from an unparalleled group of highly talented musicians and a guaranteed treat for country music lovers and die hard Cash fans alike.
The stage lights up with a colourful explosion of energy, against a striking backdrop of classic screen imagery of the ‘real deal’. Clive John, captures the essence of Cash with exceptional style and confidence. His deep, distinctive vocals are spot on, evoking pure country magic with Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues and A Thing Called Love.

Charismatic duets are superb. Renditions of Don’t You Think It’s Come Our Time and Jackson, encapsulate the tender charm and uplifting humour shared by the late enigmatic pair. The music doesn’t miss a beat as the set glides seamlessly along, evoking a timeless quality of a golden era with fresh contemporary flair.
Martin Bentley (bass) is in a league of his own and Nick Davis (guitars) and Darren Bazzoni (drums) first class. Backing vocals by Louise Masters and Amanda Stone add sparkle and glamour as the Carter sisters, complimenting the line up with equally impressive versatility. Despite the band’s professional portfolio and slick stage presence they reach a direct intimacy with audiences of all ages that other performers can’t quite pull off. This is more than just a show, it’s a heart warming story played out with genuine passion and a wonderful celebration of one of worlds greatest known artists.
