JSpades Magician LIVE!

Thurrock College Campus, Grays, Essex

28th and 29th January 2015
JSpades Magician, is the alter ego of 20 year old Josh Hodis, a college student currently studying Technical Theatre at the Grays Campus of South Essex College.  Taking this course has proved quite fortuitous as understanding the technical side of how the theatre works is something that Josh is in much need of for his forthcoming show later this month and fortunately his class mates are on hand to provide the technology needed for his magical spectacular.

Josh, who lives in Westcliff on Sea, discovered a keen interest in the world of magic and illusion from the moment he saw the popular magician, Dynamo on his tv screen back in 2012.  Just like Dynamo, Josh uses ‘JSpades' to create a mysterious alter ego, with his hoodie becoming a kind of trademark look for him.  Josh says that performing magic is a great way for shy people to become more confident, “When I’m JSpades I become more assured.  I love to see people’s reactions to my tricks and the better the reactions are, the more I’m likely to carry on doing them, particularly when I do my street magic.”  Josh says he can spend from 2 minutes to half an hour performing his street magic depending on how interested people are.  He has even been known to spontaneously perform card tricks whilst out clubbing with his pals.  This can often get him into trouble with jealous boyfriends but Josh tells me, with a smile, it did help him hook his last girlfriend.  I can imagine that a night out with Josh is never dull; indeed during our interview he performed some of his card tricks for me. He also did some tricks for some of the staff in NOSH, Southend, where we met, who were stunned into open mouthed wonder by his trickery.  We took some video footage for you which you can see below and which gives you a tiny taster of what to expect from Josh’s new show.

The venue for Josh’s show is at the brand new Thurrock College Campus in Grays which is literally just next door to Grays Train Station - so not too far to travel if you’re coming from Southend.  Josh says that the show will be dramatic, funny and mysterious and that the audience will be left in silence.  One of his tricks will be swallowing razor blades so certainly not for the faint hearted.  He says he will also be throwing eggs into the audience, so maybe take a rain hat and hope that that trick doesn’t go wrong!  For the really ‘up close’ illusions, there will be two cameramen filming him from different angles and this will be shown on a large screen, so the audience won’t miss a thing. One of the great things about this show is that the ticket prices are extraordinarily cheap, just £3.00 for adults , £2 for students and an even cheaper £1.50 for concessions.  The show, which will be performed on the Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th January, will last for an hour and a half with a 15 minute interval.   Ticket sales are beginning to pick up as interest for this young, talented magician is coming more and more to the fore.  Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start.

Josh hopes that by building up enough support and connections he will be able to bring his show to venues more closer to home but his ambition is to be just like his inspiration, Dynamo, and bag himself his very own tv show.  “My dream illusion is to walk on water and if I could get enough backing I would love to do it along the Estuary at Southend,” he tells me with a look of determination in his eyes.  You cannot help but be swept up by Josh’s enthusiasm and drive and I for one can’t wait to see what the future will bring for this new talent.  Don’t miss out.  Tickets are available via email or on the door.
