A David Bowie tribute act wasn't wildly appealing to me as I am more a respecter of Bowie than a fan. There was no denying, however, that Alex Thomas both looked and sounded the part; a tall, talented replica of the Thin White Duke.
The show started with some retro animation on the big screen at the back of the stage as the band were silhouetted by the lights. A striking image as the footage showed various cosmological scenes as the players launched into Space Oddity.
The six man band was tight and flawless as I have come to expect from seeing tribute acts at the Cliffs Pavilion.
The Man Who Sold The World brought me back to Nirvana's 1994 unplugged performance when Kurt Cobain's version reintroduced Bowie to my generation. Footage of Bowie in his various guises played in the background, along with album covers matching the song that was being played, all from his 70's catalogue.
I was beginning to lose interest towards the interval. They clearly recognised my apathy and recaptured my attention with an upbeat rendition of The Young Americans. This was accompanied by news footage from the late 70's/early 80's including the Jonestown massacre, topical due to its recent anniversary. Retro ads from the 1970's were also on display - delightfully kitsch!
As is often the case with tribute acts at the Cliffs, the atmosphere kicked up a notch after the interval. Hands began to clap and feet began to tap to classics such as Starman, Fame and Rebel Rebel. People started dancing and the band began to come more to life. The mood continued to become more buoyant as the show headed towards its climax. Let's Dance inevitably made people do just that!
By the end of the not quite sold out show, the entire audience was on its feet for All The Young Dudes (which was penned by Bowie) and the Stone's classic Let's Spend the Night Together.
Overall this was a night of quality music and musicianship. I can't imagine any fans of the Thin White Duke not enjoying Live on Mars.
