Martin Turner, founder of the legendary Wishbone Ash, one of Britain’s most enduring and best loved melodic rock acts, continues his 33-date The Beauty of Chaos 2017 UK tour, which includes a rare performance of the seminal Wishbone Ash album, ARGUS, in its entirety.
It is 45 years since Argus, Wishbone Ash’s third and most popular album was released when it reached No. 2 in the UK album charts and was named Album of the Year by UK music press. Vocalist & bassist Martin Turner, was the main composer, lyricist and creative force behind this critically acclaimed album, which remains one of the most enduring works of the classic rock era.
Kicking off the evening at Hockley's Touchline gig, the band gave us a few songs from their back catalogue as well as from their recent album, "Written in the Stars" which had fans at the sold out venue nodding along in appreciation. It's fair to say that this album remains true to the original Wishbone Ash blueprint and this was fully endorsed by Friday night's audience.
Turner has an endearing quality and shares some interesting and witty banter with the crowd throughout the evening, telling a couple of cheesy jokes and sharing the meanings behind the songs; giving us a chuckle with the "Barbie Girl" intro to "Front Page News" and even telling us about an early romance in his younger days living in his hometown, Torquay. Also, to show that there's possibly no hard feelings between him and the original members of the group, he informs us that he's left a message with Steve Upton (but is still waiting for a reply) the others, however, he tells us, "said to say hi to you guys!"
Formed in 1969 by Turner and Steve Upton, Wishbone Ash forged a unique musical identity that produced some of rock music's best loved works, influenced numerous successful bands and resulted in millions of album sales.
Now, with his band Danny Willson, Tim Brown and most recent recruit Misha Nikolic who joined the outfit in 2015, Turner is back and delivering exactly what the fans want to hear. With the promise of the entirety of the Argus album after the band had a break, you could sense the anticipation in the room. The band returned to the stage to an audience who were clearly relishing what was to come. They didn't disappoint with the classic Wishbone sound of melodic twin guitars and the great vocal harmonies of Turner and Willson. In fact these guys have become a really tight unit all round with some outstanding musicianship.
45 years after its original release, this album still has the power to resonate with its strong melodic content and universal themes which remain just as fresh and exciting today.
