The Southend MODS 20th Anniversary Show is coming soon!
MODS is the Southend Mencap Operatic and Dramatic Society. It is a drama group for adults with learning disabilities, who meet every Wednesday evening between 6.45pm and 9pm at The St John Fisher Church on Cuckoo Corner roundabout, Southend.
The group is run by Andrew and Georgie Watson who, with their dedicated band of volunteers, support the members in learning their own individual parts for the annual MODS performance. The list of shows that they've performed in the past is humongous and includes such inventive titles as, Gunshots and Golden Garters, which was their first show in 2006, Look With Your Heart, Broadway to Bognor and their last show in 2021, Fallen Angel. This year’s production is in full-on rehearsal mode and is called Tell it to the Rain.
Up until 2012, the shows were performed at The Eastwood School Theatre, however, 2013 and 2015 saw the cast perform at Southend’s Cliffs Pavilion theatre and both shows proved that this amazing group of people absolutely deserve to be on the bigger stage.
From 2016, the shows have been performed at Westcliff’s historic Palace Theatre where the students can deliver two performances per show and they are always so well received by near capacity audiences. The company are, as ever, incredibly grateful to the Palace Theatre staff for all their continued kindness, support and enthusiasm for the group’s annual shows.
Musical Director, Andrew Watson, told us,
“We are all so excited about our forthcoming show and we'd love everyone to join us for what will be a great night of musical theatre, full of fun, great music, fabulous acting with tons of ad libs and completely unscripted moments; not to mention some really emotionally touching scenes that will have audiences reaching for a tissue - so be warned bring plenty!”
Tell it to the Rain, the MODS show for 2022, is set in late 1963 and early 1964 and follows on directly from last year’s musical Fallen Angel. It tells the story of what happened in the weeks and months following the shooting of poor Angel Honeybutt. It will also finally reveal who shot her and why so be prepared for plenty of surprises along the way.
This year’s show is a mystery who-dunnit with lots of music and songs from that era that the cast hope you will want to get up and dance along to. Set against the music of sixties New York, there will be lots of classic sing and dance along tunes and numbers that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
MODS supporters and friends means the world to the group, and they can’t wait to see everyone at the Palace Theatre on Friday 18th or Saturday 19th November!

Southend Theatre Scene went along to see the MODS in rehearsals for their latest production and we were amazed at just what a talented bunch they all are! There are some really great songs in the show and the cast act through the words of each song brilliantly, which really helps the storyline along. The dancing is great too! We can't wait to see the show on the Palace Theatre stage and audiences get a chance to see the show on Friday or Saturday night. Here's some photos we took at the rehearsal to give you a flavour of what to expect in Tell It To The Rain!
