Paloma Faith
The Infinite Things Tour
Cliffs Pavilion, Southend - 1st October 2021
Paloma Faith’s first album Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful was released in 2009 providing her with some classic hits including New York and Stone Cold Sober. Since then she has released a further 4 albums with each one producing singles that smashed their way onto the nation’s airwaves; Fall to Grace’s Picking up the Pieces, A Perfect Contradiction - Only Love Can Hurt Like This and The Architect gave us Crybaby and Lullaby (with Sigala).
Paloma wrote most of the songs for Infinite Things, her latest album, before the Covid-19 pandemic swept the world. During lockdown she ripped them all up and started afresh. She also taught herself to engineer her own music and has produced some wonderfully reflective and poignant songs to showcase on tour. She also produced her second child earlier this year and is an inspiring role model and ambassador for all working mums out there.
For many this was the first time heading to a gig since pre-lockdown and the sold out Cliffs Pavilion audience were clearly buzzing for a great night out; an eclectic audience of varying ages from 7yrs to 70yrs really showing the appeal of Paloma’s music to the masses.
Paloma, herself, looks and sounds wonderful and it’s great to see an artist of her calibre performing in Southend. Not only is she beautiful, funny and self-deprecating, she’s also a dab hand with a witty anecdote or two; not least the story of when she was dragged up on stage to sing with Chaka Khan. Just like Chaka Khan, Paloma can sure work those pipes and she belts out tune after tune from every album, each one a hit.
It’s not long before the seated audience are up on their feet and singing along. You can’t help but be swept away by Faith’s infectious sense of fun. This is such a happy, feel good gig you really don’t want it to end. It must have been tricky deciding which songs to use for this tour but hits such as Crybaby, Picking up the Pieces, Monster and a ‘round the piano’ style medley of Stone Cold Sober, Stargazer, 30 Minute Love Affair, New York and Upside Down prove to be massively popular choices, all interspersed with chat and banter from the Hackney born and raised songstress.

She’s supported by a hugely talented band consisting of MD, B B Bones (guitar, keys and vocals), Andrea Goldsworthy on bass, Sam Lewis on guitar, Daisy Palmer on drums and Peter Daley on keys. Backing singers, Shanice Steer and NYM provide some amazing sounding harmonies.
Ending with an encore of Better Than This, Lullaby and Only Love Can Hurt Like This Paloma Faith leaves the stage to rousing applause and appreciation from the Southend audience. In what has been a difficult few years for many of us, Faith has magnificently returned to doing what she loves and does best - perform. She's reunited fans old and new to her fold and given us a fabulous, magical post lockdown night to remember.
