I get the chance to chat to Paul Cattermole, former band member of the nineties and 'naughties' pop sensation, S Club 7. We meet at Southend's Cliffs Pavilion and have time for a quick chat just before Paul goes on stage to warm up with the rest of the cast who include Diana Vickers, Norman Pace, Liam Tamne and Richard Meek. They are currently on tour with Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show and Paul had just driven himself down from Glasgow after appearing up there the week before. I ask him how he keeps himself occupied on the long journey and he confesses to being a bit of a Radio 2 fan and we soon discover that listening to Steve Wright is one of our guilty pleasures.
I ask Paul if he gets a lot of S Club 7 fans coming to see him in the show, "I do get quite a few coming to the stage door afterwards for a selfie, actually," he smiles, "which is really nice." Does he mind talking about S Club 7? "No, not at all - it was really good at the time."

He tells me how he was picked by Simon Fuller fresh from drama school at London's prestigious Mountview; and, after a successful audition, was chosen as one of the seven to make up the S Club 7 band. They were formed, unlike most bands, specifically to star in what was to become a hugely successful tv series which would take them to Miami and Los Angeles.
I suggest that this must have been all rather glamorous. "We stayed in some nice apartment type hotels," Paul explains, "nothing really fancy." "It was great travelling to the States but all of the indoor shots were actually filmed back in England."
Did they get to meet anyone famous while they were there? "We were doing a meet and greet one day and there were some children who were really excited to get our autographs - turns out they were Bono's kids!" Paul also got to shake Jack Nicholson's hand which he admits was "rather surreal."
S Club 7 had a reunion tour last year and I ask Paul whether they all easily clicked back together again. "Well, some of the routines felt as if they could have been better to be honest. My knee's been playing me up a bit. The thing is, some of us are 40 now!"
Since the S Club 7 days Paul has been involved with various bands and has been the voice for advertising campaigns such as HSBC, Halifax and Guinness but it was always his aim to be involved in musical theatre. The part of Eddie in The Rocky Horror Show is the role that has put him where he feels he belongs and says that the part feels just right for him.
Watch my interview with Paul to find out more about how he is enjoying playing the role that was made famous by Meatloaf and what audiences can expect when they come to see the show. He also hints at what he will be doing in the future.
