PRETTY WOMAN
SOUTHEND, CLIFFS PAVILION
on TUESDAY 6 – SATURDAY 17 AUGUST 2024
Have you ever wondered what happens to a West End show when it ends its London season? With any luck, it will get a bit of a sprucing up, maybe a re-cast, and then go out on a tour of all those towns and cities throughout the UK which have theatres of their own. There’s something rather lovely and naughty about a good local night out, and being able to leave the house 45 mins or so before show-time, rather than a two hour commute.
Following its year long run at the Savoy Theatre, Pretty Woman, The Musical has arrived in Southend at the Cliffs Pavilion for TWO whole weeks. It is going to need them too. Based on the now hugely successful 1990 film, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, this new adaptation has music by the very popular Bryan Adams (with Jim Valance) and book by Garry Marshall and J.F. Lawton.
Just in the unlikely case that you have not seen the film, the story is set in Hollywood, in and around Rodeo Drive, with its expensive shops and lavish hotels where money is not just a currency, it can buy anything, even people. Businessman, Edward Lewis, has just arrived in town to close a deal, and asks a local escort, Vivian Ward for directions to the Beverly Wiltshire Hotel. They strike their own deal, and for the next week, help each other out. It quickly becomes clear that they have a natural chemistry, and a real friendship blossoms.
Taking on roles that have been played so definitely on film cannot be easy. However, pint sized Amber Davies is absolute dynamite from the outset as Vivian. She has enough energy to power the entire evening single handed, with thrilling, tireless vocals that do great justice to the many songs she is given, with I Can’t Go Back being a highlight.
On opening night, in place of the advertised Oliver Saville, we had 1st cover Ben Darcy playing Edward. If you manage to catch him during the run in Southend, you will be lucky. This actor has a real winning charm, and invests Edward with a real warmth which suggests that underneath the veneer of the ruthless businessman, there is a lonely person with a big heart just waiting for someone to find him. With equally impressive vocals, his scenes with Amber Davies are a delight to watch. They are a winning combo, with real chemistry to match. Whether or not you know the ending, you are willing them towards a happy outcome.
However, there is also great deal going on around the central couple. We get to meet many of the other inhabitants of the neighbourhood too. Natalie Paris has great fun in the role of Kit De Luca, Vivian’s best friend, also displaying a powerful voice and personality.
Revelation of the evening has to be the one and only Ore Oduba who opens the show as a kind of narrator figure, called Happy Man, introducing us to Hollywood in a high energy opening number. He then takes off his very colourful coat (almost rivalling Joseph’s) to become the hotel manager.
Mr Thompson, who takes Vivian under his wing and gently guides her on how to behave and conduct herself in such an intimidating setting. He is the Professor Higgins to her Eliza, but far kinder. Mr Oduba is quite simply outstanding in everything he does here. He is a born performer and quite clearly has the time of his life on the stage, and we enjoy watching him just as much.
Almost stealing the show as bell-hop Giulio is the multi-talented Noah Harrison, who works his heart out, providing great physical comedy throughout the evening, also performing many roles in the ensemble too. He is a name to watch for sure.
The famous visit to the opera is very cleverly done, with a large, pulpit style box in the middle of the stage, with the excerpts from La Traviata very well sung by Lila Falce-Bass, (making her professional debut in this production), and Josh Damer Jennings. Both of them captured the operatic style, and were rewarded by a great ovation from the packed audience.
Of course, this story also has a baddie, and Stuart Maciver, also a cover, ably played Philip Stuckey, whose greedy dreams of huge wealth are eventually thwarted. He invited pantomime-style boos at the end, and clearly enjoyed his opportunity to play the role.
The entire cast work their socks off all night. The ensemble are so versatile, playing hotel waiters one minute, and Hollywood down-and-outs the next. I also liked the sets, by David Rockwell, which suggest all the necessary locations economically but effectively. There are no long scene change blackouts, and to this end, Kenneth Posner’s lighting is also very well done.
The big question is, do we get to hear the famous Roy Orbison song. Well. I’m not telling you, but all I shall say is, don’t leave before the end!
Pretty Woman is a highly entertaining night out, with adult themes so really not suitable for young children. Highly recommend for a fabulous night out for grown ups!
