ROCK OF AGES
STARRING
KEVIN KENNEDY AS ‘DENNIS DUPREE’

I was fortunate enough to see the original cast of Rock of Ages in the West End in 2012 with Shayne Ward playing Stacee Jaxx. It had come a long way from its origins which began back in July 2005 where it was pitched to Hollywood producers by writer, Chris D’Arienzo. By the time I saw the UK production it was a fully formed rock and roll machine and audiences couldn’t get enough of it.
Shortly after that the film was made starring Tom Cruise as Jaxx with Russell Brand, Mary J Blige, Alec Baldwin and Julianne Hough all adding to the star quality. However, one thing you shouldn’t expect from the stage version of Rock of Ages is that it is anything like the film. Yes, the storyline is roughly the same and all the songs are still there with Don't Stop Believing, We’re Not Gonna Make It, Wanted Dead or Alive, I Want to Know What Love Is, and Harden My Heart, to name but a few; but what this stage version gives you is a MUCH more sexed up, and more comic portrayal of the musical depicting the small town girl, Sherrie who meets city boy, Drew, and follows their rather diverse journey towards love, success and a happy ending. What makes it different from most jukebox musicals is that it allows itself to be made fun of, a kind of cheeky wink at the musical genre perhaps and frequently breaks the ‘fourth wall’ directly addressing the audience and seemingly forgetting (or perhaps reminding the audience) that they are actors in a musical?
Set during the tail end of the 1980s the show focuses on the Bourbon Room, one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary rock venues which is threatened to be pulled down to make way for a Footlocker outlet. A last ditch attempt to save it by having Stacee Jaxx and his band appear there to draw in the crowds, would seem like the perfect answer, however, things are turned upside down when Drew mistakenly tries to play cool and implies that Sherrie is just a friend to him and she is lured into the arms of heart throb, Stacee.
This jukebox musical is built around classic rock songs from the 1980s, especially from the famous glam metal bands of that decade. The musical features songs from Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison and Europe, among other well-known rock bands.
There are some lovely stand out ensemble pieces in this latest touring production and the main players are brilliantly supported by a truly hardworking and vocally excellent cast providing some great riffs and harmonies throughout.
X-Factor champion, Matt Terry, plays the role of Stacee Jaxx and puts in a suitably arrogant show of the vain rock legend; his vocals suit the genre perfectly. Kevin Kennedy, gives a nice portrayal of bar owner, Dennis Dupree, proving that he can knock out some impressive rock vocals too. Sam Turrell and Gabriella Williams as Drew and Sherrie work fabulously together vocally, not least at the top of Act 2 in the High Enough number and I loved Gabriella’s Harden My Heart number with some beautifully soft vocals.
Unfortunately, and I really hate to say this, I was less impressed with Joe Gash’s portrayal of Lonnie, who as the narrator of the piece gets to interact frequently with the audience. This is where the show gets properly down and dirty with Gash seemingly given a free rein to improv his role. Don’t get me wrong, he is really good at it...but...yes, I get that this is a raunchy show, yes, I understand that there’s going to be scenes involved that may imply sexual acts and yes, I get that there’s going to be a bit of naughty language, but, I’m not sure whether Anne in the front row of the audience was prepared to be called A*al Anne throughout the show or whether any of the parents of children in the audience (the show has been given a 12+ rating) would have been too chuffed either. There’s a lot of strong language and if you are thinking of taking your younger teens, I would seriously bear that in mind before buying a ticket. That said, Gash certainly gave a performance that was absolutely exploding with energy - perhaps bordering on just a bit too much - and had much of the audience chuckling at the x-rated humour. It’s a tough gig and he makes it look easy. There are lots of little comedic nuances in the show that will certainly have you laughing out loud regardless, but it’s definitely not the show I saw in 2012.
The show stealer for me was Andrew Carthy as Franz with a brilliantly funny portrayal as the German son of property developer, Hertz played by Vas Constanti.
The show as a whole is a hugely high energy production and boasts some incredible choreography. It is full of great uplifting tunes that you just can’t help but sing along to. The Southend audience were all up on their feet in the final number, Don’t Stop Believin’ and MD, Liam Holmes along with his band, Liam Stevenson and Alex Ward on Guitars, Elliot Mason on Bass and Vito Guerrieri on Drums deserve the hugest of applause for creating such an amazing sound to accompany the cast.
If you want a good laugh and a rockin’ good evening Rock of Ages is definitely the one for you, however, do think twice if you’re taking the kids.
