40 Years of Rumours
Cliffs Pavilion, Southend-on-Sea
Wednesday 11th April 2018
A packed Cliffs Pavilion was the venue for Rumours of Fleetwood Mac: who are, to my the best of my knowledge, the premier Fleetwood Mac tribute act touring today. The show began with a recorded video piece by none other than Mick Fleetwood, who personally introduced the band with a drum roll, thus giving this group the kind of credibility that most tribute acts can only dream of.
It was announced immediately, by the lovely and talented Emily Jarvis, that the band would be performing the Rumours album in its entirety, as it had it's 40th anniversary last year. I first listened to this album in my early twenties and I didn't get it. It was too girly and poppy for me at the time. In recent years I have rediscovered the album and now can appreciate it's greatness and what Stevie Nicks brought to the table. The album was performed flawlessly and as with the real Fleetwood Mac, it was the women whose stars shone the brightest for this segment with tracks such as 'Don't Stop' and 'Go Your Own Way' delighting the capacity crowd. Jessica Harwood sang beautifully and gave off a very 'Stevie' vibe, with her seemingly effortless grace and stage presence.
Then it was time to get back to the blues roots of Fleetwood Mac where a more masculine, edgy, guitar based energy took over as the ladies disappeared from sight. For many this era was the defining one for Fleetwood Mac, and this would have been an opinion that I once would have shared. If you will indulge me in an unlikely comparison, the first two Iron Maiden albums are considered by many to be their best, a simpler, more stripped down, earthy sound, however the band would never have achieved the success that they did had Bruce DIckenson not joined and added his operatic vocals to the mix. The same can be said for Fleetwood Mac; had Stevie Nicks not joined they would never have achieved the success that they did, but this early period music is well worth remembering and it was done so in superb style by the competent and talented musicians in the Rumours band, specifically Dave Goldberg who gave great renditions of 'Black Magic Woman' and 'Oh Well'. James Harrison also deserves a mention showing an impressive vocal range with tracks such as 'Big Love'
In the final section of the show the female members returned to the stage for a more pop/rock, 80's segment which climaxed with the crowd on their feet, clapping along - 'Little Lies', "Rhiannon", "Big Love", 'Everywhere' and 'Tusk' finished off the show to rapturous applause.
A fantastic night was had by all. This is without doubt the tribute band to see for any Fleetwood Mac fan.
