School of Rock - The Musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash hit, award-winning West End show, is coming to Southend this week.
Based on the hilarious hit movie, this new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band – sensationally performed live by the production’s young actors every night with roof-raising energy!
While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within.

We catch up with 'The Voice Kids' finalist, Keira Laver, aged 12, from Dagenham, Essex, who plays Summer at in the show
What instrument do you play?
I play the acoustic guitar. I often make my own songs and play the guitar with them.
What can you tell us about your character in the show?
Summer is very straightforward and honest. She’s not afraid to let other people know how she feels. She’s bossy and stubborn which she uses later on to guide the class to win the battle of the bands in time to play.
Have you been in any other shows, either professionally or at school?
I have been in a yearly show since I was 4 years old. I have played at Queens Theatre in Hornchurch with my stage school, I was a finalist on The Voice Kids (my coach was Jessie J), I have appeared at the Royal Festival Hall in a Little Princess and in 2017 I took part in the concert ‘Smile’ to raise money for a boy with a rare brain tumour, where I got to sing alongside West End Stars.
What was it like auditioning for School of Rock?
I was so fun! I actually met a lot of my best friends in the auditions.
Did you watch the film of School of Rock before?
The film is amazing! I watched it, as when I was out in London I came across a School of Rock poster and when I got home I watched the film and instantly fell in love it. I watch it all the time.
What’s the best thing about being a show like School of Rock?
The best thing about being in a show like School of Rock is being able to meet so many amazing people, whether those people are a part of the cast or long time School of Rock fans. I love meeting new people!
Who are your biggest influences?
One of my biggest influences is Rebecca Lock who plays Rosalie Mullins (in the show); I would love to play Ms Mullins in the future.
What do you want to do when you grow up?
I want to be producing and making my own music!
