Sharon Rose and The Thorns

The Alex, 53 Alexandra Street, Southend on Sea, Essex SS1 1BW

12th December 2014 - Doors Open at 7.30pm
Hot on the trail of her musical theatre debut in Southend Operatic’s Sister Act the Musical last month, Sharon Rose is getting back to doing what she knows and loves the best; performing with her band, the name of which she rather wittily named The Thorns. This type of humour comes as no surprise, for Sharon has a great sense of fun.  She is also unbelievably modest in her achievements - and she has many.

Sharon, 25, found her voice in church choirs and on school stages at a very young age and soon became eager to be part of the gig circuit.  This she has accomplished and in doing so has gained a host of faithful fans and advocates along the way.  In a national talent contest she was referred to as ‘a strong contender’ by the Daily Mail’s Dan Wooton and none other than pop royalty, songwriter and Take That core member, Gary Barlow, told her that she ‘is certainly on the road to stardom’.  A BBC Essex DJ selected her for involvement in a closed session with Mark Ronson and others at the world famous Abbey Road Studios, and she can count MSN Artist of the Month amongst her many accolades.

I was lucky enough to be able to see Sharon performing in Sister Act last month (see my review) and my goodness I was impressed - this girl is certainly one to watch. From the moment she opened her mouth to sing she had the audience in the palm of her hand and continued faultlessly throughout the show with such soulful clarity that you would have believed she’d been performing in musicals all her life.  The Thorns is a 7 piece band and Sharon says that they deliver a show that is a cocktail of energy, heart, poise and cool which really does elevate and cultivate the spirits.  Quite something for a pop/soul group.

They have performed all over, including reputable stages like the Jazz Cafe, The Islington Assembly Hall and clubs such as Pigalle, Club 10 and Embassy in Knightsbridge and now, in a fantastic scoop for Southend, we are immensely pleased to be able to announce that they will be performing live here in Southend on Sea at The Alex Pub on Friday 12th December 2014.  Tickets are only £10.00 and there will be other bands performing on the night too, so you are more than getting your value for money here.

Sharon counts Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé, Coldplay, Hillsong, Lauryn Hill and India Arie as just a handful of her musical role models and you can certainly hear these influences reaching out within her music.  As well as the odd rearranged cover version, Sharon will be performing some original material including her recent single, Honest Mistake, which has already been played on BBC Radio London and her first single, Superman, that was given airtime on BBC 1xtra.

To call her one of Britain’s best-kept secrets is a statement that has a ring of truth to it and you really don’t want to miss out. Beyond the unquestionable passion is a voice that is refined, timeless and sensitive. This, more than any other, is the quality that will see Sharon Rose named among soul and pop’s most noteworthy names in years to come.

I would strongly advise that you grab a ticket sooner rather than later and enjoy the cosy, intimate environment that The Alex provides because I have a feeling that this hugely talented lady and her group will be performing in much larger and more expensive venues in the not too distant future.
