SEPTEMBER 2022
Brentwood Theatre, Brentwood, Essex
Short+Sweet is the biggest little theatre and film festival in the world and is coming to England for the first time ever. It will be held at the Brentwood Theatre, Essex on the 23rd, 24th, 29th & 30th September. A Gala final for the winning plays, which are voted for by the audience and a selection of judges, will be held on 1st October. The film festival Gala final is on 25th September.
Short+Sweet will feature a variety of original short 10-minute plays and films, written, directed and performed by local writers, directors and actors from all over Essex, showcasing their skills.
A fantastic chance to see an assortment of different genres performed in 10 minutes or under. There’s murder, mobile phones, tea parties and train journeys, life changing decisions, friendships made and lost, even Pavlov’s dog makes an appearance.
The vision is simple – a more creative world 10 minutes at a time!
Hazel Lucas has been involved in the festival for the past 7 years in both Dubai and Sydney, acting, directing and stage management. She found the Short+Sweet festival to be a wonderful tool for amateur writers, directors and actors who want to share their voice and talent in a professional environment and venue.
She told us, "The Short+Sweet Festival is the biggest 10 minute performing arts festival in the world with events in 34 cities across 12 countries. The festival has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years, with the first Short+Sweet Theatre Festival in Sydney Australia in 2002. However, it has yet to make its way to the UK, until now."
With the support of the Short+Sweet international family and local drama groups and actors, Hazel has managed to finally launch the Short+Sweet Essex festival. Its goal is to become a powerful tool for diversity in the entertainment industry, as well as providing a way to discover new or established local talent by engaging more people in the live theatre experience. Unfortunately, the Covid lockdown scuppered her first efforts, but she has persevered because she believes this to be a wonderful opportunity for local theatres and film makers.
Hazel explained, "For audience members it is a unique opportunity to see local emerging, developing and established artists to further their skills of creation and performance and enjoy a great night of entertainment."
" It's a diverse fun evening which will make you laugh and cry and maybe think a bit…"
The Essex Festival is a proud member of the Short+Sweet family. They told us, "We are delighted to be running the first UK Short+Sweet Theatre & Film festival here in Essex. TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW!"
