Following a successful run of The Palace Theatre Dementia Friendly Cinema with Singin’ in the Rain, Calamity Jane and Mary Poppins, The Palace Theatre are delighted to continue to provide these events for the local community. The next Dementia Friendly Cinema will be The Wizard of Oz on Sunday 14th May at 2.00PM.
The cinema has a dementia friendly setting with temporary signage, staff who have attended a dementia awareness session and a more friendly auditorium environment. Although the screening is not exclusively for people with dementia, it is particularly suitable for people affected by dementia, their partners, family members and people who care for them professionally. Everyone is welcome but the idea is that talking during the film, moving around and leaving the cinema is all absolutely fine.
Studies have shown that Dementia Friendly Cinema events provide an invaluable role in improving a sense of personal identity and wellbeing, and stimulating communication and sociability. Even though the condition mainly affects people over the age of 65, there are more than 17,000 people in the UK under the age of 65 who have dementia.
