THE OFFICIAL SUN RECORDS CONCERT SHOW TO ENJOY ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT THE CLIFFS PAVILION
There's a Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On
I was fortunate to be at the World Premier of the Sun Records Concert Show. Considered to be the birthplace of Rock and Roll, Sun Records in Memphis is famed for discovering Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and many more.
Before the artists entered the stage, there was a brief video footage from John Singleton, President of The Sun Entertainment Corporation, introducing the event we were about to see. He described the importance of Sun Records and how they started from such small beginnings. Immediately after, there seemed to be some staging issues, as there were a few embarrassing moments as problems occurred shifting the apparatus.
If the audience were expecting a narrated history of events from 706 Union Avenue, they were to be disappointed as this was purely a concert of Sun Record songs.
After a brief glimpse of Elvis Presley (Michael Glaysher) we were treated to a wonderful blues number by Howling Wolf (Remi Bankyln). To be honest as the first half of the show progressed it felt a little flat, although one could see the eight performers were all proficient musicians, especially Jerry Lee Lewis (Cody Lee) whose version of It'll be Me, was sheer brilliance. After each song there was good applause but the atmosphere was a little tame, even though it was almost full house.
The second half was a different story. Elvis started the proceedings off and when Johnny Cash (Billy Collins-Nuttall) started singing I Walk The Line, at last the audience started clapping and really enjoying themselves. Blue Suede Shoes and other great classics followed, the band had upped their level and to be honest they could have played all night. The finale was priceless and when Pretty Woman was played, sung by Gavin Stanley, the entire audience were up and dancing in the aisles. The music continued with fantastic versions of Good Golly Miss Molly and a climax of Good Rockin' Tonight and I believe not only the audience, but the musicians enjoyed this opening night too. We must not forget the other three talented musicians Gerry Slattery, Nathan Jordan and Mark Fisher, I can see these boys touring for a long time with this show.
Long live Rock and Roll!
