TANGO MODERNO
Tango superstars’ new show to capture the heat of the street

Strictly Come Dancing superstars' Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace return to the stage with Tango Moderno. We saw them, for what we thought was for the last time, in Last Tango in 2016 but it would seem that the lure of the greasepaint, the buzz of appearing in front of a live audience and the challenge of putting on a brand new and original show was clearly too much of a temptation for the diminutive pair.
This time around the theme of the show is based on modern day dilemmas of lovelorn Millennials with Vincent and Flavia dancing around the stage like ethereal Cupids, nudging those in need of a helping hand with their love lives in the right direction. And pretty successful they are at it too!
With a backdrop of a rather grim looking block of flats, each dance has its own storyline with couples trying to find love, unrequited love, misunderstood love and even Tindr gets in on the act with lots of swiping action. Along with the modern themes are more up to date songs such as Shape of You by Ed Sheeran, Human by Rag’n’Bone Man, Just Haven't Met You Yet by Michael Bublé and The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars. There's an awful lot of focus on the mobile phone in this production with the aforementioned Tindr getting featured as well as a whole section where the dancers perform a routine entirely with their phones held to their ears - definitely one for the teens who are permanently glued to their mobiles these days. Highlights from the whole cast are the Bla Bla Cha Cha Cha and a cleverly choreographed piece entailing an underground commute to work.
The evening is hosted by Tom Parsons who narrates the proceedings in poetic style and also adds his vocals to many of the songs. However, it is the stunning vocals of Rebecca Lisweski which really draw your attention. She is also one of the dancers and is clearly a talent to be watched.
Vincent and Flavia dance alongside their talented ensemble but it is obvious that the audience have come to see the pair's dancing skills and in particular the Argentine Tango for which they are renowned and loved. The best was left to last dance with the couple giving a spellbinding performance to the beautiful The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face sung hauntingly by Rebecca Lisweski and finishing with the fabulous violin playing skills of Oliver Lewis accompanying them with a fiery and passionate Argentine Tango resulting in a well deserved standing ovation from the first night Southend audience.
Tango Moderno is playing all week at the Cliffs Pavilion until Saturday
