The Wednesday Players were on course to put on their play, Teechers, this week at Westcliff’s Palace Theatre Dixon Studio. However, just as they were half way through their penultimate rehearsal, they received the shocking news that the Dixon Studio had been forced to close due to the discovery of potential crumbling concrete and the show would have to be cancelled and ticket monies would be refunded.
However, after months and months of rehearsals in readiness for the show, The Wednesday Players' Committee jumped into action to find a new venue; a huge challenge with less than a week until curtain up. Just in the nick of time, Shoeburyness High School came to the rescue. Head Teacher, Terri-Leigh Jones had got wind of the problem and reached out to offer them the use of their fabulous school theatre so that they can go ahead with the production.
Director, Liz Hines, a former drama teacher at the school, and who is also performing in the play in the role of Mrs Parry, is clearly delighted, having put in a lot of work to get the show ready for audiences. She told me, “The cast have worked really hard on this production over the last few months. The play is actually a play within a play. The story revolves around the kids, who are saying goodbye to their drama teacher."
Liz explained, "The playwright, John Godber, wanted it to look like a school play.”
With the changes in venue, this is something that will truly accentuate Godber’s wish. Liz went on to say, “I’ve tried to approach the script in an exciting and experimental way and all of the cast will be on stage throughout, jumping into action when needed. They will be playing multiple roles and also be on hand to create extra classroom sounds and noises from the sidelines.”
Set in the 1980s, Liz is confident that the play will appeal to anyone who was either at school in the eighties or who was, or is, a teacher. That said, she also feels that audiences will find something within the play to relate to. “It’s very funny,” she informs me, “although there is a little bit of, shall we say, adult content that perhaps wouldn’t be suitable for anyone under the age of 14.”
Teechers is a fast moving production that evokes life at a comprehensive school in the eighties. The main characters Gail, Hobby and Salty, along with their drama teacher, Mr Nixon, navigate the highs and lows of school life with hilarious results.
Thanks to Shoeburyness High School, Teechers will now go ahead at 7.00pm on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th September in the Wendy Owen Hall at Shoeburyness High School, Caulfield Road, Shoeburyness, Essex SS3 9LL
Tickets will be sold on the door, cash or card, at a cheaper price of £10.
There is also ample parking within the school grounds.
As the Wednesday Players are proving - The show WILL go on!
