“Dark, dark my light and darker my desire..” The Nether is a virtual wonderland that provides total sensory immersion. Just log in, choose an identity and indulge ..."
With so many of us spending more and more time on the internet, whether it be on computers, tablets or mobile phones, Full Circle Theatre bring us a thought provoking play set in the not-too-distant future, that will leave you seriously wondering whether how much control we actually have in this ever-changing world. Do we control our devices......or do they have the power to take over our lives completely.
The company behind last year’s successful run of Passion Play, bring you this exciting and moral debating production of Jennifer Haley’s The Nether.
Written in 2013, The Nether is set in our future, where we have come to rely more and more on the internet in our daily lives. Virtual reality has become the norm. We work in this virtual world, our kids go to school in this virtual world, and we interact with other people in this virtual world. But because it is only cybernetic, because it doesn’t actually exist in the real world, does it still need to be policed. Do our actions in a virtual world have consequences in the real world? How can we be sure that our interactions in this virtual world will not have repercussions on those we have had interactions with?
The Nether is a virtual wonderland that provides total sensory immersion. Just log in, choose an identity and indulge your every desire. But when a young detective uncovers a disturbing brand of entertainment, she triggers an interrogation into the darkest corners of the imagination.
Director, Kez Hughes, tells me, "If you like Black Mirror, especially season 3, then you will love this play!"
I'm curious as to how a play of this nature translates from page to stage and Kez explains, "It's a bit like the holo-deck in Star Trek! It's a place where the characters' 'avatars' go called the Hideaway and is set in Victorian England." The stage will be set between the Hideaway and a police interrogation room.
Producer, Amanda Whiteford, tells me, "We all go online, whether it's at work or school, university or at home. I mean, you just have to look at all the different virtual reality games that are available to play online these days? This play looks at where reality ends and fantasy begins and whether you can live your life without consequence. For instance, if you kill someone in a game, should you be punished for that crime in reality. It opens up a lot of room for discussion!"
The play does contain some very adult themes, and will be a good one for debate and discussion. With this in mind, Full Circle Theatre will be very happy to hold a Q&A after the performance, for those who are interested. To contact Full Theatre about this click here
There is also a special 'student' deal on tickets. If you purchase 10 tickets together you can get them for £10 each instead of £14! Perfect for school groups for those of you who work in schools/colleges. To find out more about this offer call the box office on 01702 351135
