Rumours of Fleetwood Mac
50 Years The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac
Cliffs Pavilion, Southend-on-Sea
Friday 17th May 2019
The Cliffs Pavilion hosted a near sell-out crowd for the return of Rumours of Fleetwood Mac on Friday the 17th of May. The band had performed the Rumours album in its entirety on the last occasion, so this performance had a lot to live up to and the seven-member outfit didn't disappoint.
An image of each member was presented at the back of the stage, each one with their own separate screen. This backdrop would provide accompanying images for every song of the evening, almost like an eighth member of the band.
As usual Mick Fleetwood introduced the band with a video recording and then Monday Morning got the crowd in an upbeat mood. This was followed by Sara which was accompanied by a silhouette of children climbing a tree. (I'm sure there is a good reason for that!)
A slower, more reflective number was next as the lovely Emily Gervers showcased her talents on the piano with Songbird. This was followed by some high tempo numbers which really got the crowd tapping their feet. The Chain and Tell Me Lies were accompanied by their official videos playing in the background as every note was flawlessly delivered.
Gold Dust Woman was sung by Jess Harwood who is the closest thing to Stevie Nicks you're going to get. Then it was James Harrison’s turn to shine as he performed Big Love in such a way that Lynsey Buckingham would have been proud.
After the interval it was time for male members of the band to do their Peter Green/Blues set which was also excellent. It was almost like getting two shows for the price of one. This is when Dave Goldberg took over and performed Black Magic Woman, the stunning Albatross and Need Your Love So Bad, which was interestingly the only song not to have a visual accompaniment. Oh Well must have been one of the highlights of the night.
After the interval they were back to a full complement and performed such classics as Gypsy Eyes and Seven Wonders. The band were cheered back onstage for a lengthy encore which included World Turning, Everywhere, Don't Stop, Go Your Own Way and finally Rhiannon before drummer Alan Cosgrove told the crowd (who were on their feet at this stage) that the band would be back next year.
Everyone left feeling thoroughly satisfied. It's safe to say a good time was had by all, and I look forward to a welcome return next year. It would be unfair not to mention Scott Poley on guitar and Etienne Girard on bass who were both excellent as well.
