This is the first time I've see The Classic Rock Show, despite the fact that they have been touring for 5 years now and I certainly wasn't disappointed. The line-up has changed over the years but the essence of the tour has always remained the same - and that is, to showcase those absolute classic tunes that you just can't help but rock along to the minute you hear those opening bars.
Kicking off with Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love at Southend's Palace Theatre last night and followed with Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty number, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around certainly gave the audience an indication of the level of talent on stage. The rest of the setlist didn't disappoint, with covers of Steely Dan, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Patti Smith, The Eagles, Dire Straits, Meatloaf and AC/DC to name but a few of the 24 songs that were played and sung by the nine piece line up.
The keen eyed tribute artist fans amongst the audience may have looked twice at two of the show's performers, with Rumours of Fleetwood Mac's (our review here) Jess Harwood giving Stevie Nicks a fine run for her money and Alex Thomas, who was recently at Southend's Cliffs Pavilion performing in Live on Mars - A Tribute to David Bowie (our review here) who both gave knock out performances of the Fleetwood Mac and Bowie numbers as well as providing backing vocals, sax and keys when the other vocalists were in front. Howie G, Johnny West and Chris Ousey also take turns to belt out some tunes and are constantly supported by a fantastic sounding band.
There were some stand out performances, not least from Howie G with a cracking rendition of the Hendrix classic, All Along the Watch Tower, where he really got to show off his guitar riffing skills and again with Gary Moore's Parisienne Walkways which went down a storm with the audience.
Combined with impressive laser light effects throughout the evening, together with projections at the back of stage showing album covers and footage of the groups being covered (just in case you don't know), the show relentlessly dishes up number after number of songs.
The second half of the show had the audience up on their feet and really rocking out the last songs of the night. There's some super impressive guitar work at the end of evening from James Cole, Howie G, Wayne Banks and Johnny West who were all clearly loving the audience feedback.
Finishing with Lynard Skynyrd's Free Bird and returning, to a delighted and appreciative audience, to end the evening with a rousing version of Joe Cocker's Little Help from my Friends followed by The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again.
There's certainly something for everyone here, with music covering over at least three decades of classic rock tunes. Most importantly it is performed by a combination of talented and skilful musicians, all of whom clearly have a passion for their work, and they sound amazing. It really is the classic rock fan's 'Ultimate Live Juke Box!' You won't be disappointed.
